This notice explains how DailyNarrative ("we", "us", or "the site"), run by Ray as a personal diary at dailynarrative.life, handles personal data. Processing follows Singapore's PDPA 2012 and published notes from the national privacy regulator.
1. Who is responsible
The data controller for this website is Ray, reachable at Blk 26 Tiong Bahru Road, #03-05, Singapore 165026, or by email at [email protected]. For privacy-related requests, use the same contact details with the subject line "Privacy request".
2. What this site is
DailyNarrative is a non-commercial personal diary publishing observational writing and photographs from Singapore. We do not sell products, operate user accounts, or run paid subscriptions. Data processing is limited to what is needed to operate the site, respond to messages, and — only with your consent — understand aggregate readership through analytics.
3. Personal data we collect
Contact form. When you submit the form on the contact page, we collect your name, email address, message content, and your explicit consent checkbox selection. We do not collect this data unless you choose to send a message.
Server logs. Our web hosting provider may automatically record technical information such as IP address, browser type, referring URL, and timestamps. We use these logs for security and troubleshooting. Logs are retained according to the host's policy and are not used to build individual profiles on this site.
Cookies and local storage. Essential cookies (if any) support basic site operation. Analytics cookies are loaded only if you accept them via the cookie banner. Your cookie preference is stored in your browser's local storage under the key dn_cookie_consent for approximately six months, after which the banner may appear again so you can renew your choice.
Analytics (optional). If you opt in, a third-party analytics service may set cookies or use similar technologies to collect pseudonymous usage data — pages viewed, approximate geography, device type. We do not match analytics records to your email or real name.
4. Purposes and legal basis
We process personal data for these purposes:
- to reply to enquiries you send through the contact form (with your consent);
- to maintain site security and diagnose technical faults (legitimate interest);
- to measure aggregated traffic if you consent to analytics (consent);
- to comply with applicable law when required (legal obligation).
We do not use your contact details for marketing newsletters. A reply to your message is the only routine follow-up communication.
5. How long we keep data
Contact form submissions forwarded by email are retained in the mailbox for as long as needed to complete the conversation and for a reasonable period afterward (typically up to twenty-four months) unless you ask us to delete them sooner. Server logs are retained by the hosting provider according to their schedule. Cookie consent records remain on your device until you clear storage or until roughly six months pass.
6. Disclosure to third parties
We do not sell personal data. We may share limited information with:
- email and hosting providers that process data on our behalf to deliver the site and messages;
- analytics providers, only if you consent;
- authorities when required by law or to protect rights and safety.
Service providers are selected with reasonable care and used for operational purposes only.
7. Cross-border transfers
Some providers may store or process data outside Singapore. Where this occurs, we take reasonable steps to ensure a comparable standard of protection consistent with PDPA requirements, including contractual safeguards where appropriate.
8. Your rights under the PDPA
Subject to exceptions in the PDPA, you may:
- ask whether we hold personal data about you;
- request access to that data;
- request correction of inaccurate data;
- withdraw consent for optional processing (such as analytics), without affecting prior lawful processing;
- request deletion of contact correspondence where retention is no longer necessary.
We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling a request. We will respond within a reasonable period, typically within thirty days.
9. Withdrawal of consent
You may withdraw analytics consent at any time by clearing site data in your browser or using the cookie banner when it reappears. To withdraw consent for contact-form processing, email us — note that we may retain minimal records if required for legal or dispute purposes.
10. Security
We apply reasonable administrative and technical measures appropriate to a small personal website: HTTPS where supported by hosting, limited access to mailboxes, and no unnecessary collection. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.
11. Children
This site is written for a general audience and is not directed at children under thirteen. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has submitted data through the contact form, contact us and we will delete it promptly.
12. Links to other sites
Journal entries may mention external places or include links. Third-party sites have their own privacy practices. Review their policies before providing personal data to them.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect operational or legal changes. The "Last updated" date at the top will change when we do. Material changes will be noted on this page. Continued use of the site after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy for non-consent-based processing.
